An electrical emergency tends to happen at night, on a weekend, or the moment you arrive at your holiday property. The underlying cause is almost always one of three things: earth leakage (damp or damaged insulation), overload (more current than the circuit was designed for), or deteriorated contacts (old mechanisms, loose terminals).
The first thing we do on site is measure — not guess. We check voltage at the consumer unit, earth continuity, current per circuit with a clamp meter, and insulation resistance when needed. In 15–25 minutes we have the affected zone and the cause.
Most common repairs: replacing a mechanism (socket or switch with a burnt contact), a failed RCD or MCB, isolating a damp circuit while a proper repair is scheduled, and patching scorched cabling.
In Torrevieja we still see plenty of pre-RBT consumer units from the 80s with no super-immunised RCD. Result: any brief outage from Iberdrola / i-DE drops the whole property, and one appliance with a leak takes the entire house dark. Upgrading the consumer unit is usually the highest-return investment you can make on a Costa Blanca property — particularly if you're not here year-round.
During an emergency we explain what happened, what we're going to touch and the price before doing it. If the proper repair needs a part that isn't immediately available, we leave the installation in a safe interim state (faulty circuit isolated, labelled, rest of the property running) and come back as soon as it arrives.
Field tip to avoid the next emergency: press the RCD test button every 3 months. If it doesn't trip when you press it, the RCD is faulty and isn't going to protect you when it matters — replace it.

1) Switch off ALL the MCBs. 2) Reset the RCD. 3) Turn the MCBs back on one at a time. The one that trips the RCD is your faulty circuit — leave it off, note which one it is, and message us on WhatsApp. That isolates the fault so the rest of your house keeps running.Q.03There's a burning smell from a socket — is it urgent?
Yes — one of the few faults that genuinely needs same-day attention. It's usually a worn internal contact: it heats up, plastic softens, and if nobody catches it the next step is an arc or a small fire. Drop the MCB for that zone and message us.Q.04What does an emergency call-out cost?
There's a transparent call-out + diagnosis fee that we tell you on WhatsApp before we leave. Beyond that, the repair itself is quoted in writing before we touch anything. Classic case: the heating element's insulation has degraded (the lime in Torrevieja water accelerates it). We measure insulation resistance on the heater — if it's low, you need a new element or a new tank.
